My mom recently passed along her old kitchen table to us. We weren't necessarily in the market for a new one but I loved the bench that hers had and I loved that it would seat 2 more people.
I'm loving the farmhouse tables that are so popular right now but there was no way we were going to spend the $ for one because it would be destroyed by my 2 boys. Who are constantly banging forks and sippy cups on our table, coloring on it, spilling things on it, etc. So, the idea of a free table was appealing. And we are always up for a DIY challenge. So we decided to give this old table a makeover -- our version of a farmhouse table.
Here it is before...
First, we (and by we I mean my super sweet husband) sanded it down completely.
Total fail...didn't get a pic of it sanded down.
Then, we spray painted the legs of the table and chairs and the back of the chairs. We used Valspar spray paint and chose an off white color. The tops all sanded down so you can imagine what the table looked like once sanded but before the legs and back were spray painted.
Then we stained the top of the table, bench and the seat part of the chairs. I wanted a more grey color so we used an ebony stain. And we also hand sanded a little afterwards to accomplish the look we were wanting.
Then we glazed the legs to give it a little more character. I mixed in a grey paint with a tintable glaze.
Lastly, Keith finished it off with a coat of polyurethane. We knew we needed it to be extra durable with our 2 boys.
And here is the after....
I love how it turned out!

Looks awesome ~ yall did a great job and I love the color combo. I'm also thrilled that you gave the table anew home because I have so many memories of lots of fun times shared at that table. Xo
That looks GREAT!!!!! What a great eye to mix the color combination!!! I do hope you kept the other table as a craft table for the boys...I KNOW it has lots of memories carved in it!!!
Much love!!

Love! Looks like y'all paid mega dollars instead of DIY! Always so amazed by what you guys do! Great Job! Love ya, B
Love! It turned out so cute and seems like it was an easy little weekend project!
So glad to see chairs like this! I have nearly the same exact set and just painted my table and stained the top like yours. I've put off the chairs, but I love how yours turned out. Think I will definitely stain the chair seats after seeing these.
